The Iceland Poppy is a strikingly beautiful flower.  It has relatively translucent flowers with petals that look like they are made from thin tissue paper or slightly wrinkled silk.  When backlit by the sun they glisten like precious jewels.

Here we are, two months into this websites existence and some people are probably thinking, “boy, this woman is obsessed with the sex organs of flowers.” And to some extent people who think that are right. I am a bit obsessed. I am obsessed because philosophically the reproductive organs of plants can be a metaphor for the seasons of life that we all go through. Of course this is more on my mind this year because soon I will be turning 50 years old; and I have begun to pay attention to the disdain that people in America have for aging.

We live in a culture and a time that has no real appreciation for people over 30 years old. It is assumed, and wrongly so, that if you are over thirty years of age that you are out of touch with technology, you are to old to be “cutting edge,” you are – face it – past your prime in this face paced, highly wired world.

I strongly object to such thinking. I may one day be the inventor of a “killer app,” a “plugin,” or a “mashup;” but even so – this is not enough to carry me through. Even if I were to make millions of dollars like some have done – what have I done? Really. It isn’t like it would be a cure for a disease, the feeding of the multitudes, or making a real contribution to the quality of life on earth – “Greed is good.”

With age comes dissatisfaction with the status quo. For me, the artist, the expression of my own feelings of this dissatisfaction comes through in photography that shows the changing seasons of floral sexuality, and the immense beauty of aging flowers.
